CBI/ECONOMY NEWS
LJ: I think this is a Great night of news..it is interesting if we can put these things together and we can amalgamate them where we can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel which I think we just might start seeing that glimmer of light and that is what I am hopeful for
Mike: There is alot going on over there - My hope is they can get these banking laws passed - if they can get these banking laws passed that will lay the groundwork for the banking system to truly truly get to the point where it can handle an increase in the value and there has been alot lately that we have seen in the news about the banking laws trying to get passed & my hope is that I am going to be looking for that in the next session that comes up....I am very excited about that - hopefully we can see progress in that area.
"The first forum of Iraqi economists opens its Saturday in Beirut"
Mike: Former Dr Shabibi attending - Great News - WOW - Unidentified Shabibi Siting - looks like everybody is there that is anybody and you notice what they are talking about - talking about the economy and how those oil contracts are going to be done and what those are going to mean to everybody and it seems to me this is an unofficial forum about how the economy is going to run and how they are going to divy up the oil and how they are going to do that - talking about the 140 and the implementation of that - they talk about the exploration of the fields that need to be done and developing the national oil company and all proceeds going into Bagdad and Kurdistan - extremely interesting
LJ: I think it is great - I look at it a little differently because I think of it with the government - you have the former head of the CBI Shabibi and other individuals there that have been part of Iraqs economy and getting it to where it is today...
and could it be that the one they want gone Maliki may not be a factor going forward - why would they bring these guys back? We know why that is - they are the experts in the economy - we know they know how to bring Iraq to the future they will eventually have-interesting to me that they brought them in - that Shabibi himself is involved in this meeting and helping with where Iraq is going to go from here - like you said along time ago Mike Where is Shabibi - what is he doing? For us to see him now with what is going on politically and having this extraordinary session and open session for the next 2 weeks - When was the last time Iraq had an open session for 2 weeks? I don't think this has ever happened.....
This is not to stir any excitement but Mike and I talked about it today and we both feel like something is in the air....
Mike: You have all of these people over there talking like somebody is not in the picture - talking about the things I like to hear about the oil revenues and how they are going to affect the economy - and My main man being there, Shabibi leading the discussions and then you come back and you say okay what have I been harping on - I have been talking about getting the banking & investment laws passed and what have we have read for the last 3 days that is what they have been talking about - now open session - I am excited to see what they will do with that because they can put some of these things under the table that would really give them an opportunity to get that solidified and then the elections will take care of the other issue we have and then we have a window of opportunity at that time
LJ: Our excitement is that could we finally possibly be seeing some movement of what we have been watching for - we are not excited about the end result yet because we believe there are a few more steps that need to take place - If you get rid of Maliki things will move really fast - that is what we have always said - We are excited to see the movement that coincides with possibly handling Maliki and if that happens we will be excited - If we see the banking laws, infrastructure, Amnesty etc passed during the next few weeks during the open session something is afoot
"Economist: cooperation of the Central Bank of Iraq with his French counterpart, will develop the country's financial system"
Mike: WOW - really WOW - where do I start? One of my biggest concerns was if the Central Bank wasn't being run by anyone who understood the monetary policy - I was correct - now we have Shabibi at an economic meeting- chairing it - then you have French Central Bank helping Turki to get his house in order to get the banking system in and one of the main reasons was to help him maintain their monetary policy so that they don't lose any more ground than they have already lost - For me THATS HUGE - I always said I wanted to know who was driving the bus and if the Central Bank is driving the bus then we are back on track to a certain degree - this signals to me that Maliki has no power over the Central Bank at this particular point in time and they are confident enough to move forward to try to get the banking sectors restructured they can go ahead and do something with that - It is a HUGE WOW - Its a Huge positive thing going on for us
Trying to put into words how important this is to the whole process - the Central Bank being in charge and making sure they can take care of monetary policy - we have been talking about that for almost 2 months and the lack of whose in charge and now I am starting to see people who are in charge of the economy & monetary policy to take charge and take control - Why are they doing that now? #1 they need to- they don't want to have any more devaluation of any of their currency and thats locally and obviously they want to go ahead and move the revalue of that closer and you need to do that by pumping up the banking sector - absolutely wonderful news for my ears..........Very very positive
LJ: When you look at it from the standpoint of it showing the independence of the bank - that is probably more important than anything else - Maliki has had so much control over everything with the govt and controlling all aspects of it - from the military -to banking - interior ministry - being prime minister, taking away the communications sector and Allawis cousin - all of those things - you look at the independence of the bank and you finally see Turki has to follow the guidelines of what the IMF has set forth for him - we know for a fact we should become excited because we are starting to see the areas and the fact that Mamoud is being brought up on criminal charges - he is the guy who is in charge of the Supreme and Federal Court System Now they are going after him with the law - that will make independent the court system and the bank system
when we start to see the formation of a government to work and do what it is supposed to do that is a reason for us to take hold of the current events that are happening - all of these things are not just happening by accident - I am excited to see the independence of both the bank and the courts because that is the way it should be
"During a meeting with a delegation from the World Bank, the Minister of Planning looking restructure Iraqi government banks"
Mike: Wow...Triple WOW...Very very important to note that the IMF wanted those 2 banks restructured - that was part of the deal to help them compete on a level where they needed to get themselves internationally competitive....all of a sudden the World Bank shows up with a checkbook and says here we are going to pay you to help restructure
in the coming days..or in the near future - we need the banking sector to be pretty robust
Why do we need the banking sectors? We talked about it earlier - they need to run these transactions and guarantees - Just on Tues we talked about the Letters of credit coming out and them guaranteeing those letters of credit and doing what they needed to do with those letters of credit
Now you have the World Bank coming in saying we are cleaning that up - we are going to help you clean up the banking sector and to develop the banking sector....I guess my question is Why all of sudden right now? The answer is they need these banks to be in shape so they can start making money - how are the banks going to make money? They are going to loan money on these projects and eventually they are going to need that to add value to the currency and that banking system needs to go - thats the gasoline to the economy
And we are over there in Beirut talking about the economy, oil, etc
And then the Banks say to Mr Turki, Dr Shabibi tells me you don't know how to do what we have asked you to - So we are going to give you a hand to do what you need to do.....
Its almost like he went to Jordan and this plan was laid out and we are starting to see it play out - This is why I am so excited about the open session being there - its sounds to me like we are going to see these banking laws get passed and those are laws that can be passed without having people being there....the banking laws are not politically motivated so it is easier to get these passed because they know that it is going to better the economy - everybody can agree on these very quickly - I am excited to see what will happen in the open session
Mike: What have we talked about in the news in the last few days
CBI comes out with new instructions for the sale of the currency which was huge news
Then we talk about the Letters of Credit and how we are going to guarantee things and guess what guys if You don't have product we are not going to guarantee it - we are clamping down on fake companies and everything coming in...then you have Part 2
World Bank comes out saying we are going to help you restructure the Rafidian- We read articles about it that they needed to do it and they were thinking about it - Now the World Bank comes in knocks on their door now saying I have a check for you to help you do this and we are going to help you get this done - Put that together with a huge economic meeting in Beirut talking about HCL and how we are going to run this economy and how we are going to support it - it leads me to believe that they are acting like Maliki is in check and they no longer believe he is an influence to this process to the point that they can get done what they need to get done
"Deputy: the deterioration of currencies Iran and Syria have contributed down the exchange rate of the dinar against the dollar"
Mike: Wow.....WOW.....Great article.....demand for the dollar has skyrocketed which is great for us because if I want you to start using the other currency I have to give you a reason to do it - I have to add value to it
Think about what has happened in the last 3 days on the banking side - They have basically closed all of the holes that we can possibly can to Syrian and Iran - thats where all that money was going - that is where all those guarantees were going - well who knew then - Well Shabibi knew that from the outside and since he had that meeting in Jordan and Turki and the ministers came over and he laid out his plan on how they were going to stop this you've seen the auction numbers go down - you've seen everything come down and you have seen them do everything but stabilize the value inside the country with the dinar and now they are ready to do that because it is important for the people to have a stable dinar so they can add value sometime in the future
I am excited to hear we have really cut those two entities out and they did it by keeping Maliki out of the Central Bank - once they were able to isolate him outside of that and I think that was done a couple of months ago when Dr Shabibi said Look you can play with whatever you want to play with but we have the goods on you here - and don't forget Turki was over there a week ago handing down some information what they needed to do
